Well, Hog fans, we are officially 100 days away from the Arkansas football season starting against UAPB at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock!
I know that each and every one of you are just super excited to get the season going.
That is why I will be putting up a Razorback football highlight on our Natty State Sports socials every day from now until the season starts. I am going to try to make it relevant to the number of days left on the countdown, but some numbers are tougher than others. Also, I will give a quick story of what I remember about the particular play/game that’s being highlighted.
Since we are 100 days away, enjoy former Arkansas DB Rohan Gaines getting a pick-6 against Ole Miss in 2014 that went 100 yards.
I will never forget that game. Arkansas had finally broken the 17-game SEC losing streak the week before by shutting out LSU at home 17-0. The win over the Tigers saw the Hogs run to the Golden Boot to take it from LSU’s sideline, and fans rushed the field.
Ole Miss was having one of the best seasons in its history that season. The Rebels beat Alabama and were on their way to the SEC West title. However, a week before playing Arkansas, elite receiver LaQuon Treadwell broke his leg against Auburn and was out for the season.
Losing him hampered the Ole Miss offense more than anyone could have imagined.
Arkansas was flying high, and the Rebels were down in the dumps. It was a perfect opportunity for the Hogs to shut out Ole Miss 30-0 and shut out back-to-back SEC opponents for the first time.
The weather for this game was disgusting. There was a down-pouring of rain all day, cold temperatures in November, and wind gusting all over the place. But that didn’t stop Hog fans from filling up Razorback Stadium to watch a classic beatdown of No. 8 Ole Miss.
Defensive end Trey Flowers ate Ole Miss quarterback Bo Wallace up all day long, and Arkansas’ offense took advantage of every turnover the Rebs committed.
But no play stood out more than this one. It was a beautiful play on the ball, beautiful blocking by the defensive convoy, and it led to absolute bedlam in the stands. What made it even better was the guy who picked it off has one of the best sounding names in Arkansas sports history.
This was the start of something beautiful: the Razorbacks beating Ole Miss on the regular. Arkansas hasn’t had much success against many SEC opponents recently, but Ole Miss is always a game in which Arkansas plays its best.
