Quick Hits: Offensive fireworks lift Hogs over A-State

The No. 1 Arkansas Razorbacks flexed their muscles Tuesday night, beating in-state opponent Arkansas State 13-0 in another midweek matchup inside Baum-Walker Stadium.

Colin Fisher recorded his 5th win of the season as the Hogs scored 13 runs on 12 hits while seven Razorback pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts. Here’s a closer look at the action during Arkansas’ 18th consecutive home win.

Scoring Recap

Bottom 1 – Arkansas 2, Arkansas St. 0: Peyton Stovall worked a leadoff walk, followed by a single from Ben McLaughlin and another walk from Wehiwa Aloy to load the bases with no outs. Kendall Diggs and Nolan Souza struck out before Peyton Holt grabbed an infield single to score Stovall from third and McLaughlin from second via a throwing error.

Bottom 2 – Arkansas 4, Arkansas St. 0: Will Edmunson doubles down the left field line with one out, and is brought home by a two-out 396ft Ben McLaughlin homer.

Bottom 3 – Arkansas 13, Arkansas St. 0: With one out, Nolan Souza doubled, and then came in to score two batters later on an RBI double from Ross Lovich. Ryder Helfick worked a two-out walk, followed by an Edmunson infield single, Helfrick and Lovich would both come in to score on another throwing error. Stovall stepped in and was hit in the foot. McLaughlin then singled into right, scoring Edmunson. Aloy stepped in and singled to left, scoring Peyton Stovall. Diggs would then work a walk to load the bases. With beer hats aplenty, Nolan Souza sent a baseball 458 feet deep into the Fayetteville night. The nine-run inning would mercifully come to an end with a Peyton Holt groundout.

Gorilla of the Game

Ben McLaughlin: 3-4, HR, 2 1BS, 3 RBI, 3 R

True freshman Nolan Souza gave McLaughlin a run for his money for this award on Tuesday night, going 2-3 with a double to go along with his mammoth 3rd inning grand slam. McLaughlin takes the cake though, going 3-4 with two singles and a two-run homer in the 2nd inning. The Hutchinson Community College transfer had an underwhelming weekend against LSU, going 2-12, so to see him bounce back against the Red Wolves is certainly nice.

Most Valuable Arm

Jake Faherty: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K

Faherty hadn’t pitched since 3/9 but had electric stuff Tuesday night as he struck out the side after issuing a leadoff walk in his lone inning of work. 9 of Faherty’s 15 pitches were strikes.

Other Notes & Observations

  • Ben McLaughlin got to play third tonight, recording a 7th-inning putout.
  • Jayson Jones recorded his first at-bat since 3/16 against Mizzou.
  • Nolan Souza hit the 5th grand slam of the season for Arkansas, three of which have been via the Hawaiian infield combo.
  • Wehiwa Aloy extends his hitting streak to 10 games, and the Razorback shortstop’s bat is starting to get really hot.
