Hoop Hogs join the big dogs in NIL landscape

For those who have yet to catch on, the John Calipari era is going to be a bit different than what Razorback fans have grown used to.

It is an arm’s race in today’s age of college basketball, and Arkansas has officially earned a seat at the table to compete with the heavy-hitters in the NIL landscape.

With the public acknowledgment of the Tyson family making a sizable investment and rumored involvement from the Waltons, estimates of anywhere between $5-7 million in NIL backing have been reported.

For reference, a piece at 247Sports released on Wednesday had Kansas at the top of the totem pole at around $4 million in disbursed NIL last season.

The reality, however, is that too much is never enough. Arkansas athletic director Hunter Yurachek stressed on Wednesday the importance of continued support so Calipari and the Hoop Hogs can sustain a healthy run.

“Coach Cal and I talked about NIL robustly,” Yurachek said. “We talked about it on the plane. Him and I are on the same page on where it needs to be for us to be competitive. We’ve got some ways to go to get there.

“Reports make it sound like it is a done deal and the money is in the bank. What I will tell you is that is not the case.

“We’ve got a pretty good program in place, but we are going to need help from people across the state to make sure that we give Coach Cal the tools he needs to put a great team on the floor. Not only this year, but next year and the following year.”

Calipari will need every ounce of resources at his disposal to take an entirely empty roster and turn it into a contender in Year 1.

Yurachek is committed to holding up his end of the bargain and has no doubt in Calipari’s ability to get the job done.

“Him and I are on the same page of what it needs to be, and it’s my job to give him the tools to make sure he can be successful,” Yurachek said. “I’m really confident that he can put a great team together quickly.”
