Calipari hires Coleman and Martin to Arkansas staff

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas’ John Calipari has hired Chin Coleman and Chuck Martin to his coaching staff, it was announced Wednesday.

According to a release, Coleman will serve as associate head coach and Martin will be an assistant coach. They are the second and third known hires to Calipari’s staff since his hiring on April 10.

Former Louisville head coach and Kentucky assistant Kenny Payne was also named associate head coach on April 18.

A native of Chicago, Coleman spent the last three seasons under Calipari at Kentucky after a four-season stint at Illinois that began in 2017. Before those stops, he was an assistant at Bradley (2012-15) and Illinois-Chicago (2015-17).

Coleman began his college coaching career as an assistant at Colorado State in 2011. He was briefly the director of player development at Nebraska as well.

As a player, Coleman played at Weber State and Lamar. With the Cardinals, he led the team in scoring three times and earned All-Sun Belt first-team honors in each of those seasons.

Coleman then went on to have a seven-year professional career.

Martin, 54, is a long-time college assistant who served on Calipari’s bench as an assistant and recruiting coordinator at Kentucky last season.

A native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Martin began his college coaching career as an assistant at Seton Hall in 1999. He was also an assistant at UMass (2000-01), Drexel (2001-04), St. John’s (2004-06) and Memphis (2006-08) prior to accepting the head coaching position at Marist.

Martin was let go at Marist after winning 41 games in five seasons.

In 2014, the Monmouth alum took an assistant job at Indiana. He later joined Frank Martin’s staff at South Carolina in 2017 and Dana Altman’s staff at Oregon in 2022.

Prior to his time with the Hoosiers, Martin served as a scout with the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder.
